The Beginning of My Life

Jul 29, 2012

Okay, so once upon a time, I had a couple of blogs. A personal blog, a weight loss blog, and a photography blog. Well, times are changing! I took the personal and weight loss blogs down for a while, but I've recently decided to make this blog my 'everything' blog. If you want a peek at the other blogs to get a background, you are going to have to wait for just a bit while I do some maintanence on them.

To begin this story, I must tell you that yet again, I have started doing the weight loss thing. It's a long story, and hopefully we'll dive into it soon. But...I started working with a guy named Wes at Total Health and Fitness. For a long time, I've felt like if someone would just give me a daily/weekly plan and tell me what to eat and what exercises to do, then I would do them. I just needed someone to lay it out for me and that's exactly what Wes does. I see him weekly, weigh in, take body fat measurements, go over anything I'm struggling with, talk about my menu for the previous week, make some changes for the coming week, talk about my workouts from the previous week, make changes for the coming week and go on my way.

So far, I'd like to report that the last week was pretty successful! I'm 1/2 way through week 2 and so far, so good there ! I'm gonna go ahead and just give you my stats and put it all out there. So, I went into Wes at 288 lbs. My body fat % was 46.7. My body fat mass was 134.6 and my lean body mass was 153.8. Wes estimated that it would take about 8 months to drop my body fat % to 25%. That seems like a LOT of different numbers, but that's the reason I LOVE Total Health and Fitness! Instead of just pounds and weight, they are more concerned with body fat percentage. What a different approach! Most other 'diets' or programs are centered around how much weight can you lose and how fast can you lose it. If you watch THESE videos, it will explain to you their approach. It makes sense to me and I'm excited to start this.

PS - These pictures are intentionally hideous in an effort to make my after picture  look  good.

As of the last Wed., I was down 2 lbs (286). That may not seem like a huge deal for someone who has over 120 lbs to lose, but here's where it gets cool. We took the body fat measurements again and I had lost 7.81 lbs of body fat - whoa! I'd also gained 5.81 lbs of lean mass which equaled the 2 lb. weight loss. If you watch those videos, the reason I'm excited about that will make perfect sense. Muscle burns more calories than fat does, so to have gained 5 lbs of muscle and lost almost 8 lbs. of fat is a pretty big achievement (for me). As of yesterday, I weighed myself and was down another 2 lbs. I go see Wes again Wed, so I'm hoping for a good week!

Are you using My Fitness Pal? It's an app for your smartphone or you can use it online too. Find me and friend me - Celestegrover. You enter what you eat and it has a huge data base of foods and their nutritional information. You can set goals and it tells you how many calories you should be taking in and all that. I LOVE it! It's VERY eye opening.

Let's chat about tonight shall we? Growing up, it was a tradition in our house to make cookies every Sunday. Unless we were gone or something we did this every Sunday! That tradition still stands for the most part. While living with my parents, we didn't do it every Sunday but at least one or two a month. We'd all dig into the dough and then cook whatever was remaining (usually not a lot - we Hardy's love our dough). As I've gotten older, I still have a love affair with dough. I crave it - all week I look forward to Sundays so I can eat the dough. Old traditions/habits die hard, huh? Well, today I thought I'd test myself. We haven't made cookies for a couple months and I was thinking they sounded good tonight. So, as I made a batch of dough, Ron was creating the recipe in My Fitness Pal. It's NOT pretty, people! The recipe makes about 36 cookies. We've used it for years. The total calorie count on the dough = 5279. Holy shazaam! That's more than 2.5 days worth of calories if you are eating 2000 calories a day. Now granted you aren't going to sit and eat that ENTIRE bowl of dough or every cookie that it makes, but still that's 146 calories per cookie.

I was having a struggle with myself. If I make the dough, will I have enough control to stop at just one spoonful of dough. I just wanted a taste, but I was afraid that the taste would trigger a mob of bad habits and that I'd be starting all over. So, I had a conversation with Ron about it and we decided that I would limit myself to 3 servings. So if I wanted 2 scoops of dough and 1 cookie, then that was it - no more. I made the dough - I scooped out the first batch onto the cookie sheet and then put a small spoonful into my mouth. Uuum, it was good, but I didn't feel like I wanted to eat the whole bowl. I made another batch and had another scoop. It really wasn't fabulous. I had my taste, and that was good. I had no desire to gorge myself. I had one cookie - it was good, but again, no desire to eat 15 more. I know myself well enough and Ron knows me well enough that if temptation is staring me in the face, then the harder it will be for me. So he said, who can we go deliver cookies to? Now we don't have any more in the house and my craving was satisfied by a small amount. I feel victorious, even if in a small way. I'm guessing that my body is adapting to my new way of life. I've noticed that I haven't had a serious sugar craving for the last week. I used to NEED a sweet treat after dinner or before bed, but not really any more. Eating clean and living healthy can be done. The first week is probably the worst - at least it was for me. But it's getting a lot easier. Hopefully I still feel this way in a few more weeks.

Anyway...I have A LOT of thoughts and feelings and struggles and high points and I will be sharing them here on the blog. So stay tuned - LOTS to come!

April & Arlene

Jul 18, 2012

If you didn't get a chance to participate in our mother's day makeover mini sessions, you really missed out! We had SUCH a GREAT time! I loved meeting such gorgeous and beautiful women.

The relationship between a mother/daughter is one of the most complicated yet amazing relationships on earth. Once I had my own daughter I couldn't stop the flow of emotion that I felt. I knew immediately that we would be strong. She is beautiful and as she grows, we can tell that she is so much like me in personality and spirit. She has a strong will and gorgeous eyes. A desire to make others happy. She is my world! No other relationship fulfills me in the way that my relationship with her does. We have our battles and we have our close moments - I'll take the bad with the good, as long as she is mine, I will be hers.

So, to celebrate the relationship with momma and daughter, we had Kristen with Budget Beauty Mama come and give the girls makeovers. When they were complete, we took a few pictures of them together. Watching these women together was so fun! Thank you Kristen! And thank you April for surprising your mom with such a fun day! I loved getting to know both of you! I feel lucky to call you my new friends!
